The Tablet has commissioned a poll on the attitudes of Britons to the impending State visit by the Pope to their country and discovered that most have no opinion about the matter but among those who do, supporters outnumber opponents by more than two-to-one.
A grand total of 11 percent of Britons think the Pope shouldn't come. This indicates that the extent of secular opposition to the Pope's visit is being greatly over-stated but that those who are opposed are very vocal in comparison with their numbers and are often in elite positions (eg Professor Richard Dawkins).
The poll also found that despite Dawkins' best efforts a majority of Britons continue to believe that religion is a force for good in society.
By the way, can I suggest you read and interpret the poll results for yourself. You might come up with different impressions from either myself or The Tablet.
