Who is running the Government's social policy? Not Fianna Fail, that's for sure. The Green's latest coup is to make the larger party sign up to a proposal called the Gender Recognition Bill. This looks set to be as radical as possible.
The issue is back in the news today because the Government has decided to drop its Supreme Court appeal against a High Court decision requiring it to change the birth cert of a man in order to recognise his 'new sex', or rather, his 'true sex'.
Other jurisdictions also recognise the possibility of changing sex, or of having your 'true sex' (or 'gender') recognised. But no jurisdiction has to go to the extreme of altering a birth cert in order to say that a person born a man, was in fact born a woman, or vice versa.
We appear to be looking to base our law on the UK law. The UK law allows that a person's birth cert can be changed without them having to undergo an operation or even hormone treatment. This means a person could their full male sex organs and be officially recognised as a woman. Is it just me who thinks this is ever-so-slightly potty?
